Training & Getting Started

Do I need previous Muay Thai experience to train here?

Not at all. We welcome everyone from complete beginners to professional fighters. Our group classes are structured so coaches can give individual attention regardless of your level. If you'd prefer one-on-one guidance to start, personal training sessions are also available.

What should I bring to a training session?

Bring comfortable workout clothing (shorts and a t-shirt are fine), a towel, and a water bottle. You don't need to bring any equipment on your first day. If you have your own gloves, shin guards, or hand wraps, feel free to bring them along.

Is gear available to hire or buy at the gym?

Yes. We have boxing gloves, shin guards, and hand wraps available for hire at the gym. Our on-site Fight Store also stocks gloves, wraps, shorts, shin guards, and other training gear if you'd prefer to purchase your own.

What equipment does the gym have?

R1 is a fully equipped Muay Thai facility with a competition-size ring, heavy bags, speed bags, a padwork area, and a dedicated strength and conditioning zone with free weights, kettlebells, battle ropes, and more. See our Facilities page for the full rundown.

What does a typical training day look like?

Most guests train twice a day. Morning sessions run from 7:30 AM and afternoon sessions from 4:00 PM. Each session is roughly 1.5–2 hours and includes a warm-up, technique drills, padwork, bag work, clinch work, and conditioning. Between sessions you're free to relax, hit the beach, or grab food at our café.

Do you offer fight opportunities?

Yes. For those interested in competing, our coaches can arrange fights at local stadiums in Phuket. We also run a dedicated Fighter Development program for those serious about stepping into the ring. Speak to a coach about your goals and they'll guide you from there.

Travel & Logistics

How do I get from Phuket Airport to the gym?

Phuket International Airport (HKT) is approximately 20–25 minutes from our gym in Bangtao. The easiest options are:

  • Grab (ride-hailing app) — Download the Grab app before you arrive. A ride from the airport to Bangtao typically costs 400–600 THB.
  • Private taxi — Available at the airport arrivals hall. Expect to pay around 800–1,000 THB to Bangtao.
  • Airport transfer — Contact us before your arrival and we can help arrange a pickup.
Where exactly is the gym located?

We're located in Bangtao, on Phuket's west coast. Bangtao is a quieter area compared to Patong, with easy access to Bangtao Beach, restaurants, cafes, and local markets. Check our Contact page for directions and a map.

Do you offer accommodation?

Yes. We have on-site accommodation within walking distance of the gym, ranging from private rooms to shared options. Training and accommodation packages are available for guests staying a week or longer. Visit our Accommodation page for details and photos.

Can I rent a scooter through the gym?

Yes. We offer scooter rentals so you can explore Phuket at your own pace. It's the most common way to get around the island. Daily and weekly rates are available. See our Scooter Rental page for pricing and requirements.

Do I need a visa to train in Thailand?

Most nationalities receive a 30–60 day visa exemption on arrival in Thailand, which is enough for a short training holiday. For longer stays (2–3+ months), you may want to look into a tourist visa or an ED (Education) visa. We recommend checking the latest Thai immigration requirements for your specific nationality before travelling.

Booking & Payments

Do I need to book in advance?

Walk-ins are welcome for single sessions. However, if you're planning a training camp or want to reserve accommodation, we recommend booking in advance to guarantee availability, especially during peak season (November–March).

What is the cancellation policy?

Cancellations made 48 hours or more before your scheduled start date receive a full refund. Cancellations within 48 hours are non-refundable but may be rescheduled subject to availability. For training packages, unused sessions can be extended if you notify us in advance. Contact us directly for special circumstances.

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept cash (Thai Baht), bank transfer, and major credit/debit cards. For training packages and accommodation bookings, a deposit may be required to confirm your reservation.

Are there discounts for longer stays?

Yes. Our weekly, monthly, and long-term training packages offer significant savings compared to drop-in rates. The longer your stay, the better the value. Check our Pricing page for current rates and packages.
